The name of the artist remained unknown because he so wanted. The photographer Auguste Giraudon hired him to produce images of peasant life in the Barbizon area.

Could the photographer have been Constant Famin? he took photographs of the same size and genre as these, some with a girl and donkey who look suspiciously like those in photos stamped Giraudon.

I would say not: Constant Famin was also present in the exhibition that has been at Washington DC National Gallery of Art.
There is an article publishe in Washington Post by that time and it shows also a photograph mad by Famin (Forst Scene):
