The Abstract Photos of Brett Weston

Rock Abstraction, c. 1973

Brett Weston (1911 - 1993), son of a famous photographer (Edward Weston) and a master in his own right: as I was looking at his photos, the name of Ralph Steiner came to my mind, and his amazing movie from 1929 (H2O). And actually both of them call in mind the name of Georgia O'Keeffe and her way of approaching the abstract. Starting from a flower, or from a dune of sand, or just from the movement of a river, getting rid of non-essential in successive steps, keeping what remains when you renounced of everything: it remains a rhythm, a shape, the essence; the gate to the beyond the apparent.
