Wenzel Hablik - Projects for a Crystalline Architecture

Wenzel Hablik - Cantilever Cupola with Five Hilltops as Basis, 1924
Wenzel Hablik had great architectural ideas, that remained only as projects: for his fantasy even sky was not a limit. I saw his Cantilever Cupola with Five Hilltops as Basis at the exhibition of Modernism that was hosted by the Corcoran Gallery of Art. The drawing dated from 1924.

I looked then on the web to find more about Hablik. This other drawing is from 1921: a project for an exhibition building. Guy Nordenson (Professor of Architecture at Berkeley) noted in Tall Building as Metaphor that the project of Hablik had both a sculpturally strong form (almost like an Easter Island figure) and a completely regular and rationalized structure of load-bearing vertices.

Look at these two drawings: for Hablik a city would have to tell a story. The first drawing shows the city as a stage for a Utopia. As for the other drawing, the city became a dance of fantastic heroes.

    Multzumiri, Larry
