Hillwood Estate

Marjorie Merriweather Post, one of the richest ladies in American history, and a great art collector.

When I began I did it for the joy of it, and it was only as the collections grew and such great interest was evidenced by others, that I came to the realization that the collection should belong to the country (Mrs Post).

And so her estate in DC was bequeathed to the public: the Hillwood Museum and Gardens.

The main part of the collections consist in Russian art: Mrs. Post was for several years the wife of Joseph E. Davies, ambassador of the United States to Moscow between 1936-1938. It was during that time that Mrs. Post developed her interest for Russian decorative and liturgical art.

She was a superb woman, and I am sure that her taste and passion for art added to her natural beauty.

Visiting the mansion of Hillwood is a fabulous experience: portraits of Russian emperors, porcelains that have belonged once to Catherine the Great, jewelery, paintings, furniture, and flowers overwhelming everything; Mrs. Post had a passion for flowers and floral arrangements.

You cannot take pictures in the mansion, only outside, so I tried to keep mental images. I found later something on the web: some of the great art pieces there.
