The Old Flag at Tackle Box

The old US flag, now on a wall in Tackle Box in Georgetown, dates from 1863. If you count the stars on the flag, there are 45: forty five states by that time. West Virginia had been admitted in 1863: it was the forty fifth state.

The forty-sixth would be admitted in the Union one year later, in 1864: Nevada.

The other fourteen new states that followed were Nebraska (1867), Colorado (1876), Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Washington (1889), Idaho and Wyoming (1890), Utah (1896), Oklahoma (1907), Arizona and New Mexico (1912), Alaska and Hawaii (1959).
