Nuberu Bagu, the Japanese New Wave, developed at roughly the same time with the French Nouvelle Vague (by the way, the term of Nuberu Bagu is a Japanese pronunciation of Nouvelle Vague), but arose as more of a movement devoted to questioning, analyzing, critiquing and (at times) upsetting social conventions (Wikipedia).
