Jan Švankmajer's Faust begins in Prague, in 1994. Some anonymous clerk suddenly finds himself in the middle of a puppetry show: a puppet replica to Christopher Marlowe's Faust. As you can guess, the world of the puppets permeates more and more the common world of our clerk, who becomes a wooden puppet himself, then again a human, then again a wooden puppet, and so on, till there is no more escape. Who is handling the puppets? Švankmajer's puppets are sophisticated creatures, wooden carved, we are in Prague, the town of puppeteers and of alchemists, where deals with Mephistopheles were conceivable - -the athanors on Zlatna Ulica have kept many secrets - and maybe Švankmajer knows some of them; after all his movie was produced by ATHANOR Studio.
