Ostrov (The Island), Russia, 2006

Somewhere in Northern Russia in a small Russian Orthodox monastery lives an unusual man whose bizarre conduct confuses his fellow monks, while others who visit the island believe that the man has the power to heal, exorcise demons and foretell the future - Остров (The Island), 2006

Undeva prin nordul Rusiei, intr-o mica manastire ortodoxa isi duce zilele un om neobisnuit, a carui purtare ciudata ii uimeste pe ceilalti calugari, in vreme ce altii car vin pe ostrov au credinta ca omul are puterea de a tamadui, de a-i izgoni pe diavoli si de a prevedea viitorul - Остров (Insula), 2006

Toti suntem pacatosi. Vietuieste cum poti. Incearca doar sa nu pacatuiesti prea mult.

We are all sinners. Live as you can. Just try not to sin too much. This is, I think, the essential teaching of this movie. Frankly, I didn't like it at the beginning. I had read lots of comments, with too much hype, and too much political subtext, wrapped in a religious discourse. Actually the movie is very religious, only in a very profound way, where all comparisons made with other kind of films, with other kind of cultures, miss the point. Anatoly has a special gift to cure the souls of the others, while he has absolutely no power to cure his own soul. In the end he finds out that all his painful repentance, of a whole life, has largely been useless: his sin had been not so important as it seemed. And actually all others' problems (and his own) are not that important, on a transcendent scale. We are all sinners. Live as you can. Just try not to sin too much.
