Here is the history of this painting: it was received by Dr. Joseph Peyron (who was working at the asylum) as a gift from the artist; it became then part of the collection Marie Gasquet, née Girard (as a gift from the son of Dr. Peyron); it passed then successively to Galerie Bernheim-Jeune, Paris, the collection Paul Cassirer, Berlin, collection F. Kallmann, Berlin, Galerie E. Bignou, Paris, collection Witzinger, Bâle, collection Max et Rosy Kaganovitch. In 1973 Max et Rosy Kaganovitch donated the painting to the French state for the Musée du Jeu de Paume. In 1986 the painting was moved to Musée d'Orsay (information taken from the catalog of Musée d'Orsay)
