Born in California in 1954 from a Jamaican-American father and a Tamil Indian mother; studied at Howard and UC Hastings; member of the Democratic Party; San Francisco District Attorney (2004-2011), Attorney General of California (2011-2017), presently US Senator from California (the first Indian American elected in the Senate); pro-gun control, against death penalty, pro-choice, vigorously opposing President Trump policies (her slogan is courage not courtesy); described in the media as a potential presidential candidate for 2020.

Her name (Kamala) is Sanskrit, meaning She of the Lotus (which sends to goddess Lakshmi, represented in the Hindu tradition as standing above a lotus flower).
