Roger Cohen: Religion At Its Worst
A Christian minister in Florida organizes a Koran burning. Mission accomplished. In replica, Muslim fidels slaughter Christians at Mazar-i-Sharif, in Afghanistan. Mission accomplished. In North Ireland a 23 year old Catholic policemen is killed by other Catholics: probably for them the young policeman was not Catholic enough. Mission accomplished. And the list is very long. And it is not only about insane bigots; behind them there are cynical politicians, and cynical religious leaders, who look for political or religious gains. Burning the Koran to demonstrate that Obama is what? A Muslim? What madness! Does the Florida pastor care for the UN staff killed in replica at Mazar-i-Sharif? No, he does not. He will use their tragedy to incite for more bigotry. And to claim that Obama is a Muslim. I am sick of all this bigotry and all this cynicism, and all this madness, everywhere in the world. And I say, everywhere!

'I see why lots of people turn to religion — fear of death, ordering principle in a mysterious universe, refuge from pain, even revelation. But surely it’s meaningless without mercy and forgiveness, and surely its very antithesis must be hatred and murder. At least that’s how it appears to a nonbeliever. '
