Eve Packer: New Nails
just a glimpse from Eve's newest volume of verses:
and i’m having my nails done
in cranberry fuchsia glitter
and the girl, from russia, having
her nails dried next to me,
here at nails boutique,
a psych major at baruch,
after we talk abt the russian poets,
her favorite: tsataeva,
tells me how her family,
from vladivostock, was sent,
grandparents, babies, everybody,
to northern siberia, ‘a snow desert,’
one hour to pack, the grand-
parents die on the way, the others
build a shed against
the cold, during the war
some fought, and
after, the family is allowed
back
