Art Stands from the Ashes

In the midst of destruction, chaos and economic strongholds, art stands as witness to the creative soul.

We come together, at a time of great frustration, in a defiant celebration of hope for all that is best in humanity. Creativity breeds hope for sanity in a time of insanity.

On September 11, 2011, artists sing our hope, dance for peace, and draw our dreams.

A Gathering of The Tribes - Celebrating Yardbird's B-Day

Jay Mason, Portrait of Charlie Parker
oil on canvas

A Gathering of The Tribes today, August 29th: celebrating Charlie Parker's 93's birthday.

It's a celebration of past and present.

In the fifties existentialism, blues jazz, and abstract art was the talk of the town. Now a-days anarchy, Buddhism, free Jazz, installation and conceptual art prevails.

There will be there Eve Packer, Yuko Otomo and Steve Dalachinsky, among other poets and musicians.

Heidi Latsky Dance at La MaMa Moves, June 16-18

Eve is part of this splendid performance: this weekend Heidi Latsky presents the latest iteration of IF at the La MaMa Moves! Dance Festival.

IF features artists with varied limbs in a work that transcends physical difference. Heidi Latsky's fascination with different body types and distinctive ways of moving captures each performer's unique personality and emotions, creating a tangible sensuality, a touch of voyeurism, and a new frame of reference.

Eve Packer: NY Woman

This poem is the signature piece of Eve Packer, and it usually finishes her jazz poetry performances. It is a manifesto of NY woman protest.

I’M A NY WOMAN, I DO WHAT I WANT
do not tell me what I cannot & can do

do not tell me to wear long black baggy pants
when i wanna wear a short sheer orange
see-thru mini on subway, bus, tram, train,
trolley or any vehicle/of choice
(thats in moving violation of my volition/do not tell me what
I cannot & can do)

do not tell me not to bite my nails,
color my hair, ride my bike
w/o helmet, stop giving taxi drivers
a hard time piece of my mind,
cross against the light, (why
else is it red), sit on someone elses
stoop, swim twice in one day,
eat so much fruit
do not tell me what i cannot & can do

do not tell me not to talk to
strangers, flirt, network my cleavage, keep my legs
crossed & mouth shut while you are
orbiting saturn
do not tell me what I cannot & can do

I pay my rent, con ed, phone, get to work on time,
health club, yoga, dance class (sure need my r & r after
this urban guerrilla warfare), i light a fire
under my own stove, or use my phone-finger
for take-out, ticketron, 1-800, do not tell me
what I cannot & can do

& do not say you’ll e-mail if you won’t,
call when you don’t, appear late, make or
change plans w/o consulting, promise then cop, say you love
me & get misplaced, love & 1.50, 2 bucks, 2.10, 2.50?,
will get me on the 1,2, 3, 5, 6, 7, A,C,E, F,D, N, R
or shuttle 24/7 this is ny if you love me baby
show up

& do not tell me I cannot start my song
w/cannot i’m a ny woman I do what I want,
do not tell me not to go to the deli
at 4 a.m. startk naked even if there is no deli

& STOP TELLING ME TO STOP MAKING NOISE

Jazz Poetry Session at Cornelia Street Cafe

This jazz poetry session is so SoHo like, or Tribeca like! I remember it was January 1st in 2004, I attended such an event in the evening, in a cafe at the border between SoHo and Tribeca (actually such a border is just a hypothesis, you never know where SoHo ends and Tribeca starts), anyway not far from Canal Street. My sister Jill read there two of her essays, then we went to another cafe and drank cup after cup of coffee till late in night, telling each other our misfortunes. That was crazy!

For someone who doesn't know NY and would expect glamor: well, these cafes in SoHo and Tribeca don't look special in any way. To say it straightly, they are ugly, they look poor, even sleazy, while they fascinate. Like all NY, they are too aware of being the Empire to care.

There was also Eve at the cafe where the event was taking place, as well as Steve Dalachinsky. I should write here about Steve's poetry, too, he's a great guy.

Such an event always gathers these guys who keep fighting against the Moloch which is SoHo, this monster which keeps their illusions while destroying almost everybody. But it's worth!

I was not in the best mood, I was looking for a job by that time and it was harsh. I remember Eve listened to me and gave me some words of comfort. It takes sometimes only a few minutes to see how wonderful a person is, someone you barely know. It happened that I found a good job just a couple of days after that.

Well, the jazz poetry session from this video took place in the Village (so, pretty close to SoHo), at Cornelia Street Cafe. Together with Eve Packer were Daniel Carter (sax) and Micah Gaugh (keyboard/percussion). It was in 2007.

Bloodrage (1979)

In a small town a gentle boy is accidentally killing a prostitute and flees to New York where he discovers his true instincts. He will start to murder hooker after hooker, while a detective from his town is chasing him. Bloodrage, made in 1979 by Joseph Zito. Some say it sucks, some say it's a NYC Sleazoid classic. The truth lies in between. Eve Packer has an episodic role, as an East Side bar patron.

Carnival of Blood (1970)

A psychopathic killer hangs around in Coney Island and chooses his victims at the carousel. He likes to kill them and dismember their bodies. Well, as this shouldn't be enough, this guy also likes Teddy Bears. Don't befriend guys who like Teddy Bears, my advice! Carnival of Blood, made in 1970, known also as Death Rides a Carousel. Eve Packer has here a small role, as the date of a sailor. The sailor is not the murderer, so it's okay.

Eve Packer: New Nails

just a glimpse from Eve's newest volume of verses:

and i’m having my nails done
in cranberry fuchsia glitter
and the girl, from russia, having
her nails dried next to me,
here at nails boutique,
a psych major at baruch,
after we talk abt the russian poets,
her favorite: tsataeva,
tells me how her family,
from vladivostock, was sent,
grandparents, babies, everybody,
to northern siberia, ‘a snow desert,’
one hour to pack, the grand-
parents die on the way, the others
build a shed against
the cold, during the war
some fought, and
after, the family is allowed
back

Eve Packer: What is Love

billy i say,

we are at Playpen, girls parading
plumed & feathered birds of
paradise, billy slamming tokens
right & left fistfuls
of peppermints, friday rush hour,
hi-5’s, kisses from dancers to
frequent customers, in this semi-
naked arena billy i say what is love
& he puts it on the mike:

being one w/the one
you desire, you cld come in on
yr hands & knees, i’d throw
my arms arnd you, give you a
big kiss & hug, say thats
my baby, other people
wldn’t understand
but i do

love, what is love i say to dillon
red-head cop on the corner: like
parent w/a kid, like the
church says come hell or high
water

love what is love i say to candy the TV
he has just chased, the one w/
the terrible face job awful jaw stubble (i guess
this is her corner), what is
love: caring for me, knowing what i
do, this is my job she says
desperation leaking from
running mascara, caring
not abt what i do,
but for who i am

love i say what is love to rumanian
taxi driver: what makes me the greatest
fighter in the world, what is love i say
to my friend nancy: wet underpants,
what is love i say to bob
first warm day of spring looking up
coffee cup in hand he says
constant sunlight

love i say what is love
to the voice in
my ear & you say
what i’m waiting for
you to tell me

Eve Packer

One evening, it was in December 1999, my sister Jill gave me a call and said that we were invited at a party at a very good friend of her, Eve. I left home, took the ferry (I was living in Staten Island), and met in Manhattan with Jill. Together we went to the party, in an apartment not far from Washington Square. Eve opened us, it was the first time I was seeing her: a very nice person with witty eyes and a genuine smile, busy with the refreshments for the partiers. We entered the living room, Jill and me, it was full of people. I think there were twenty or thirty people there, maybe more. Later came also Pola, my other sister, with her husband.

Wine and beer was in abundance, sweets, cheese, grapes, and the like. A guy was gently playing a keyboard, his name was, if my memories are good, Funky Felonious. Steve Dalachinsky was there, along with Yuko, his wife. I made friends quickly with several people in the room, the atmosphere was very open. They all were artists of some kind or another, poets or musicians, or both (like Steve), the artistic milieu of the Village.

A Bronx-born, Eve Packer is a poet and a performance artist. As a poet she's the kind of Weegee poet, it means, as authentic, as provocative, as the New York shot by Weegee is. As a performer she is a spoken word artist, it means, her performances add to poetry the fourth dimension: her art is poetry, and her art is jazz - her jazz is spoken word art, that's it.

I'm going to post here in near future some of Eve's poems, each one is a gem: fun, thrilling, provocative, sharp as a stiletto (Stephen Wolf, the Villager). Here is an interview she gave in January 2011. Enjoy!
