Railroad in Cumberland

Cumberland is the place where the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal ends. It should have gone to Pittsburgh, but they gave up in Cumberland, as it was no more economically justified: by the time the canal had reached the Allegheny Mountains, the railroad was entering the picture (this was by 1850).

The canal starts in Georgetown, DC: I walked it up to Cabin John, MD, and I went by car several times to the Great Falls. I wish I were up to Cumberland, I wasn't. So it goes.
