Ofir Trainin, Family in Transition, 2018
A family with four children from an Israeli town. After twenty years of marriage the husband realizes that his male identity doesn't correspond to his inner self and decides to undergo surgery for sex change. How will react everybody, how will evolve this family? Of course, things need to be digested, and the first reactions could change in time. Initially the wife decides to stand by her husband. Will she remain firm? What about the children? And what about the reaction of people in town?
‘Family in Transition’ Review: A Parent Prepares for Change https://t.co/wrfyvT5h44— Pierre Radulescu (@pierreradulescu) November 23, 2018
To make this documentary, director Ofir Trainin followed the evolution of the family for three years. Such a long making process leads of course to a very deep understanding of the problems, while also adding to the whole the presence of the filmmaker as a new factor (possibly disturbing?).
I didn't have the occasion to watch this documentary, only I have read some reviews (along with an interview taken to the director). From what I read, Family in Transition tries to keep itself afar from the ideological arena, to remain confined to a witness position: in such a story it is no place for right versus wrong, there are just facts of life evolving somehow for better or worse, and any conclusion is as elusive as only life can be.
