Hyman Bloom - The Hull

Hyman Bloom - The Hull, 1952
oil on canvas

An extreme rendering of an autopsy, it is hard to look at it. The once living body is now just flesh and carcass.

Bloom is a loner in the guise of Soutine and Ryder. His spirituality rivals Rembrandt and Odilon Redon. HIs colors are as stark as Vlaminck or Derain, yet his paintings maintain the shock value of something never seen before (Mark W. Scala).
