Second Circle, 1990
Круг второй (Second Circle), made by Aleksandr Sokurov in 1990: not a movie for the weak ones. Its austerity is extreme. Darkness covers everything, with people coming out from it very shortly, or just remaining shapes there (well, if you have the patience to watch it to the end, you'll get in love with that darkness, and Rembrandt will come in mind).
Don't look for interpretations, it's not Tarkovsky, here everything is crystal clear: a son comes in a remote small industrial town to bury his father. Poverty and desolation are beyond any imagination. The corpse is washed in snow: no running water. All people the son has to deal with (doctors, embalmers, undertakers, etc) are indifferent, hostile, vulgar. Any sense of the sacral is lost.
Nobody tells us who was the father, who is the son, what was the relation between them. Who cares?
Счастливы близкие наши, ушедшие раньше нас (Happy those nearest to us who passed away earlier), that's all.
