John Singer Sargent
American artist considered the leading portrait painter of his generation for his evocations of Edwardian era luxury (wiki). Born in Florence (1856), passed away in London (1925). Active in Boston and Paris. Educated in Germany and France, possessed a keen eye for regional social conventions. He instinctively knew what pose, attire, and mood to suggest in London, New York, or Boston. His Londoners have an air of pomp and splendor, New Yorkers have a cosmopolitan appearance, and Bostonians often look a bit more serious, as if ancestral responsibilities rested on their shoulders (Smithsonian American Art Museum).
