Hyperrealism and Neo-Expressionism As the Same Thing: Jack Levine

Jack Levine - 35 Minutes from Times Square, 1956
oil on canvas
Hirshhorn

Levine is a realist at heart who distorts forms, blurs surfaces, and decomposes flesh in a clinical manner. Here, in his 35 Minutes from Times Square, the women are matter of fact, resigned, unglamorous, socially marginalized working girls, neither threatening nor alluring (Mark W. Scala).

A realist at heart who distorts forms: this is a perfect definition for Expressionism, and also for Hyerrealism. Some call it Hyerrealism, others call it Neo-Expressionism: it is basically the same thing.
