Nicolae Effingham Grant (1868-1950) was born in Bucharest, son of British diplomat who had settled in Romania by 1840 and would become a well known name in the 19th century history of Bucharest. The son, Nicolae, studied painting in Bucharest (with Theodor Aman and Gheorghe Tattarescu), then in France where he remained for many years. Eventually he returned to Romania, keeping his beloved French memories and tastes and ways for the rest of his life - while trying to render in his paintings the uniqueness of Romanian spirit. Assuming the Romanian universe through his French sensibility.
