Nagin Is Reelected In New Orleans

Ray Nagin among supporters
Ray Nagin remains the mayor of New Orleans.

Says Peter Whoriskey, a Washington Post staff writer, "Had he won, Landrieu would have been the first white mayor of the city since his father left office in 1978. The fact that a white candidate had made it to the runoff was taken as a reflection of the mass exodus of blacks from the city."

According to election analyst Greg Rigamer, "the vote split largely along racial lines. Nagin won by gaining the support of about 80 percent of black voters and about 20 percent of white voters."

Anyway, the incumbent proved resilient, despite a controversial performance during Katrina.
