Conlon Nancarow: Studies #3a-e for Player Piano
This five-studies suite is probably Nancarrow'a first composition for player-piano. It was created sometime by 1949-50, and it is known as the Boogie-Woogie Suite.
The videos are based on recordings made on the Ampico Bösendorfer Grand of Jürgen Hocker, restored under the supervision of Nancarrow.
(the explanations for each study belong to Jürgen Hocker)
- 3a: seven musical layers over a boogie-woogie bass at an extremely fast speed
-3b: a twelve measure ostinato in the bass is repeated ten times, with an overlay of various melodic lines
-3c: animated blues with canonic passages
-3d: leisury jazz piece
- 3e: extremely fast boogie-woogie
