Lyudmila Gurchenko in Waiting for Gavrilov

She is 39, divorced, with a daughter in high school. A mysterious Gavrilov has sent her the a note, wait for me tomorrow at ten in front of the city office, I will come to marry you.

She comes to the city office, to wait for the guy. The guy is not there. One hour passes, then another hour, the one more, then a day and a night. Moments of hope and of despair are following in a crazy succession, meanwhile life goes on around in Odessa, and  there are some admirers who would be interested in her, but she still hopes. Is waiting for Gavrilov like waiting for Godot? Maybe, but there is something there: while she is hopeful and is desperate, and hopeful and desperate, she still has the empathy for what's around, for all those guys who happen to pass by, with their problems, big and small, serious and ridiculous, and she is in, in each of those moments that happen around her, while she is still waiting, loosing her faith, getting it again.

And Gavrilov comes in the very end, he spent the day and night at the police station, seemingly it was a mistake, just the wrong guy at the wrong moment... but he is now there in front of her, and the day is beautiful again.

She is Lyudmila Gurchenko, like always larger than life.

Just a few words about director Pyotr Todorovsky. His approach in observing the everyday calls in mind the movies of Berlanga.

Carnival in Moscow, New Year 1956

It's Moscow and 1955 is approaching its end. Everybody thinks at the New Year's Eve. A carnival would take place at the Culture House. The director is old school; he cannot imagine anything but boring. A group of young amateur artists will do their best to make the Carnival Night unforgettable. And so the night toward New Year 1956 will bring to all C Новым Годoм, C Новым Cчастьeм - New Year, New Luck.

Карнавальная Hочь (Carnival Night), the movie of Eldar Ryazanov featuring a very young Lyudmila Gurchenko; one of the movies of my adolescence: this is my New Year's gift to all of you.

And don't worry if you don't know Russian. I also know just a little bit. Just enjoy the movie: it's fun, it's full of music. And it's a nostalgic window to those times, when today's grandfathers were just youngsters dreaming love. There are today other rhythms, and the way people of 1956 were dressed is just funny. It doesn't matter: young hearts are the same.

Well, and I found also a copy with English subtitles!

Cinci Seri

Am avut norocul sa gasesc aceste trei video-uri pe youTube, ele va vor spune mult mai mult despre Cinci Seri decat as putea sa o fac.

Iar Ludmila Gurcenko, ce actrita extraordinara! Adolesecenta cu nasul carn din Noapte de Carnaval, peste ani Vera din Gara pentru Doi, iar aici in rolul Tamarei, fascinanta, in acelasi timp provocatoare si retinuta, nebuna si inteleapta.

Liudmila Gurcenko in Noapte de Carnaval
