L'Internationale

Pierre De Geyter

In 1927, the Soviet leaders discovered that the real author of the music for The Internationale had not yet died. Pierre was invited to Moscow for the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the October Revolution and was in the stands of the honorary guests. Joseph Stalin awarded him a Soviet Union state pension. After his death in 1932, more than fifty thousand people attended his funeral.

Debout les damnés de la terre
Debout les forçats de la faim
La raison tonne en son cratère
C'est l'éruption de la fin
Du passé faisons table rase
Foule, esclaves, debout, debout
La monde va changer de base
Nous ne sommes rien, soyons tout!

C'est la lutte finale
Groupons nous, et demain
L'Internationale
Sera le genre humain

Il n'est pas de sauveurs suprêmes
Ni Dieu, ni César, ni tribun
Producteurs, sauvons nous nous-mêmes
Décrétons le salut commun
Pour que le voleur rende gorge
Pour tirer l'esprit du cachot
Soufflons nous même notre forge
Battons le fer quand il est chaud

C'est la lutte finale
Groupons nous, et demain
L'Internationale

L'Internationale
Sera le genre humain

Hideux dans leur apothéose
Les rois de la mine et du rail
Ont-ils jamais fait autre chose
Que dévaliser le travail
Dans les coffres-forts de la bande
Ce qu'il a crée s'est fondu
En décrétant qu'on le lui rende
Le peuple ne veut que son dû

C'est la lutte finale
Groupons nous, et demain
L'Internationale

L'Internationale
Sera le genre humain

Ouvriers, paysans, nous sommes
Le grand parti des travailleurs
La terre n'appartient qu'aux hommes
L'oisif ira loger ailleurs
Combien, de nos chairs se repaissent
Mais si les corbeaux, les vautours
Un de ces matins disparaissent
Le soleil brillera toujours

Catalan Universe: Lluís Llach

Lluís Llach i Grande
(font d'imatge: http://www.lluisllach.cat/)

on estem tots lligats?
Si no podem desfer-nos-en
mai no podrem caminar!

Si estirem tots, ella caurà
i molt de temps no pot durar,
segur que tomba, tomba, tomba
ben corcada deu ser ja.

Si jo l'estiro fort per aquí
i tu l'estires fort per allà,
segur que tomba, tomba, tomba,
i ens podrem alliberar.

Però, Siset, fa molt temps ja,
les mans se'm van escorxant,
i quan la força se me'n va
ella és més ampla i més gran.

Ben cert sé que està podrida
però és que, Siset, pesa tant,
que a cops la força m'oblida.
Torna'm a dir el teu cant:

Si estirem tots, ella caurà...

Si jo l'estiro fort per aquí...

L'avi Siset ja no diu res,
mal vent que se l'emportà,
ell qui sap cap a quin indret
i jo a sota el portal.

I mentre passen els nous vailets
estiro el coll per cantar
el darrer cant d'en Siset,
el darrer que em va ensenyar.

Si estirem tots, ella caurà...

Si jo l'estiro fort per aquí..

The old Siset talked to me
on the porch during dawn
while we waited for the sun
and watched the carts passing by.

Siset, don't you see the stake
to which we are all tied?
If we can not separate us from it,
then we can never walk!

If we all pull, it will fall
and it will not endure for long,
it is sure that it falls, falls, falls,
it should already be well rotten.

If you pull hard here,
and I pull hard there,
it is sure that it falls, falls, falls,
and we can liberate ourselves.

But, Siset, so much time has passed,
the hands are being flayed,
and when my strength goes away,
it will be wider and bigger.

I very well know that it is rotten,
but it is just, Siset, that it weighs so much
so that sometimes my strength leaves me.1
Tell me your song again.

If we all pull, it will fall
and it will not endure for long,
it is sure that it falls, falls, falls,
it should already be well rotten.

If you pull hard here,
and I pull hard there,
it is sure that it falls, falls, falls,
and we can liberate ourselves.

The old Siset now said nothing.
A bad wind came about
- he knows towards where -
and I went under the porch.

And while the new lads passed by,
I stretched my throat to sing
the last song of Siset,
the last that he taught me.

If we all pull, it will fall
and it will not endure for long,
it is sure that it falls, falls, falls,
it should already be well rotten.

If you pull hard here,
and I pull hard there,
it is sure that it falls, falls, falls,
and we can liberate ourselves.

Un Rebelde Escondite en la Selva de Colombia

(source: NY Times)
no copyright infringement intended

Slavoj Žižek, What Can't You Say

Slavoj Žižek: In our permissive times, a new form of the unsayable is more and more acquiring a central role: it is not only that certain things are prohibited to say – the prohibition itself is prohibited: we are not allowed to say openly what is prohibited. Already in Stalinism, it was not only prohibited to criticize Stalin and the party publicly, it was even more prohibited to announce this prohibition publicly. If someone were to shout back at a critic of Stalin, Are you crazy? Don’t you know that we are not allowed to do this? he would have disappeared into the Gulag even faster than the open critic of Stalin. Unexpectedly, the same holds for the relations of domination in our permissive post-patriarchal societies: a modern boss is tolerant, he behaves like a colleague of ours, sharing dirty jokes, inviting us for a drink, openly displaying his weaknesses, admitting that he is merely human like us. He is deeply offended if we remind him that he is our boss – however, it is this very rejection of explicit authority that guarantees his de facto power. This is why the first gesture of liberation is to force the master to act as one: our only defense is to reject his warm human approach and to insist that he should treat us with cold distance. We live in weird times in which we are compelled to behave as if we are free, so that the unsayable is not our freedom but the very fact of our servitude.

Jerusalem, 1917, and then 1896

Jerusalem, 1917
fair use

The image above comes from 1917. Jerusalem, the Holy City for three great religions.

If I forget thee, O Jerusalem,
let my right hand forget her cunning

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets

The dew which descends upon Jerusalem is a remedy from every sickness because it is from the gardens of Paradise.

The Psalms, the Gospel, and the Hadith, three sister books. To whom should the Holly City belong? I think the correct question should be, When Will the Fighting Stop?

The film footage below comes from 1896. Cameramen from the studio of Frères Lumière came to Jerusalem to discover the uniqueness of the place. And they found a city where Arabs, Jews and Christians were living and praying together.

no copyright infringement intended

Marcia Bujold recommends a movie: Red Father

Bernard Ades
(1903-1986))
no copyright infringement intended

Red Father, a 56 minute documentary from 2014, written, directed and produced by Tova Beck-Friedman, puts before us the life of Bernard Ades, as seen by her daughter: the story of a Jewish lawyer fighting for civil rights and confronting legal racism in the America of the 1920's, then fighting in the Communist Brigades in the Spanish Civil War, later in life  black listed and surveilled by the US authorities at the beginning of Cold War. The daughter admires his father for the strength of his attitude, nonetheless she questions his political and ideological radicalism.

Red Father will participate in the Krakow Film Festival Trailer Competition. Marcia Bujold recommends the movie and calls us to vote the trailer, by going to http://trailers.krakowfilmfestival.pl/en/menu/trailers/-/trailers/0/red%20father and submitting there our cast. Here is the trailer:
